Group1631 · The Grey Matter Diagnostic™

Your impact gets measured.
The organization delivering it doesn't.

Most mission‑driven organizations cannot see exactly what is holding their growth back. Group1631 shows you where you are strong, where you are exposed, and what to fix first.

Group1631 is the organizational health partner for mission‑driven organizations. We ran these organizations before we ever measured them, and we work with your leadership to close the gaps that matter, in the order they matter.

The Problem

Four disciplines. Four separate rooms.

Every mission‑driven organization is asked to prove its impact. Almost none are equipped to prove they can survive delivering it. Four disciplines decide the answer: financial, revenue development, marketing, and strategy. In most organizations they are run in four separate rooms, by people who never see the same number.

“How are we doing?”
asks the board
And gets a narrative. Compelling, sincere, and impossible to compare to last year or to anyone else.
“Can you handle more?”
asks the funder
And gets a hope. That question sits underneath every major gift conversation, and it rarely gets answered straight.
“What do we fix first?”
asks the team
And gets the loudest opinion in the room. Without a shared measure, urgency wins over importance every time.

Three questions that should have simple answers. None of them do, and a single bad year compounds all three.

What the diagnostic is, and isn't

The Grey Matter Diagnostic isn't a consultant's opinion, a generic assessment, a financial audit, or another planning retreat. It's an objective, benchmarked read of the disciplines that decide whether your organization can sustain and grow its mission, and a prioritized plan for what to fix first.

What We Do

We don't hand you a report and leave.

Your leadership team spends about two days on this. A workbook comes first so the sessions open with your real numbers, then the benchmarking and analysis are ours. Allow around four weeks start to finish, most of which is scheduling. The diagnostic is the instrument; the deliverable is a comprehensive, prioritized roadmap in 90-day increments, built by experts who have sat in the chair and in the board room.

01
Diagnose
Facilitated sessions with your leadership team, scored across four dimensions against the published standards for your sector.
The Grey Matter Diagnostic™
02
Interpret
Someone who has run an organization like yours goes through every score before you see it. Gaps then rank by impact rather than by score, because the lowest number is rarely the thing to fix first.
Grey matter experience
03
Plan
We review the full report and the roadmap with your leadership: now, next, later, every action paired with the outcome it buys. This is what you hold until you re‑score.
Board‑ready roadmap
04
Re‑score
Measure again. Progress stops being a claim and becomes a number that moved, and the plan resets for what's next.
Provable movement
4
Interlocking Dimensions
Financial, revenue development, marketing, and strategy. Health is balance across all four. A high score in one does not make an organization healthy.
1
Composite Score
One number your board, your staff, and your funders can all read the same way, with the reasoning behind it rather than just the result.
2days
Of Your Team's Time
A workbook first, so the sessions open with your real numbers. Then one to two days with your leadership team. The benchmarking and analysis are ours.
Who We Serve

Same disciplines. Your language.

A rescue mission, a college, and a trade association live or die on the same four disciplines. They just don't speak the same language or measure against the same benchmarks, so we tune the diagnostic to each.

The Framework

Four disciplines. One outcome.

Mission is the outcome. Revenue is the engine. Underneath sit a balanced revenue mix and integrated marketing, all of it scaled by technology, data and insight. Remove any layer and the one above it weakens, which is why we score all four together rather than one at a time.

01
Financial
02
Revenue Development
03
Marketing
04
Strategy

Every sector calls the second one something different. Fundraising in a nonprofit, advancement in higher education, membership and non‑dues revenue in an association. Same four disciplines, scored against the standards your sector already publishes.

Outcomes

A report tells you what’s wrong. An outcome changes the organization.

The score is not the point. What it makes possible is a board that argues from evidence, a leadership team that agrees on what comes first, and a funder conversation that opens with a number instead of a hope.

Shared language
One number everyone reads the same way.
A ranked sequence
Gaps ordered by impact, not by volume.
Provable movement
Re-scoring turns effort into evidence.

Why Us

We've been in the chair.

We've sat in the CEO chair. We've run fundraising and owned marketing. We've inherited broken systems, and watched good organizations waste money because they couldn't see what was actually wrong. We've also watched organizations break through the moment they found the right problem and fixed it in the right order. The Grey Matter Diagnostic is what we built from that.

"
Been in the chair.
Owned the numbers.
Three co-founders. CEO, CMO, Executive Director. 30+ years each. Operators, not observers.
"
Seen what breaks
organizations. And what doesn't.
Decades of pattern recognition across strategy, fundraising, marketing, technology, and change.
"
Built a framework.
Made it measurable.
That experience became a model, systematized and benchmarked against the published standards for each sector we serve.
"
100+ years of pattern
recognition. Made objective.
Research-based. Experience-tested. Third-party validated. A score, not an opinion.
Across our careers we have served, advised, and sat on the leadership teams of organizations right across the spectrum, including:
Faith-based nonprofits
Focus on the Family
Compassion International
Mercy Ships
Prison Fellowship
The Navigators
Higher education
Azusa Pacific University
Judson University
Point Loma Nazarene University
Cornell University
Associations
Association of Christian Schools International
Christian Leadership Alliance
Employers Council
Manufacturer & Business Association

The framework itself is published as The Grey Matter Diagnostic, and benchmarked against the standards each sector already publishes, so the result is evidence, not opinion. See the book →
